ARPRO® Eliminates Packaging Waste

A new concept in furniture and packaging using ARPRO expanded polypropylene.
A revolutionary new eco-friendly packaging concept, aimed at large screen TVs, has been designed by Tom Ballhatchet, a masters’ graduate of Central St Martins College of Art and Design. Ballhatchet’s unique Television Packaging Stand is two products in one and allows consumers to retain and re-use the transit packaging, turning ‘waste’ into a design item.

For some time Tom has been concerned with the vast proportion of the world's non degradable waste consisting of consumer packaging. Rather than dispose of the plastics and cardboard, Tom thought "why not use a more resilient and lightweight material to act as packaging and then as furniture?" The aesthetically pleasing concept is made from a single material, ARPRO expanded polypropylene, and crucially, is 100% recyclable.

Ballhatchet asserts: “It’s even easy to assemble; you simply slide apart and re-attach the main pieces to form a very neat looking stand. All of the packaging is integrated so that nothing goes to waste. And there’s a cable tidy too.”

The Television Packaging Stand comprises upper and lower pieces of packaging that lock together to form a wedge-shaped stand, complete with storage. The weight of the television is supported vertically by four lower-density corner pieces used for cushioning delicate electronics in transit. Central to the design is that it's modular, allowing the packaging to accommodate many sizes of television with minimal reconfiguration.

"The design is lightweight, yet sturdy, and can be set up in minutes," elaborates Ballhatchet. "When the time comes to move house, the stand can be reconverted to packaging and will protect time and time again."

“JSP is delighted that Tom Ballhatchet specified ARPRO for his ingenious yet simple concept,” explains Paul Compton, JSP’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (Europe). “ARPRO allows two products to become one whilst retaining design simplicity.”

ARPRO provides a unique combination of material properties, making it ideal for use in a wide range of products, from furniture to automotive components. JSP is expert at tailoring ARPRO for specific applications, where the expanded polypropylene can reduce mass without jeopardising structural rigidity; withstand multiple impacts without significant deformation and return to its original shape following dynamic stress.

The TV Stand concept was shown at the recent Ideal Home Exhibition, and Ballhatchet hopes to put the design into production with a TV manufacturer. For a practical demonstration of the TV Packaging Stand, search “ARPRO TV Stand” at www.youtube.com or view the video below.

The novel concept acts as television packaging in-transit whilst furniture in-situ.
